Meanwhile, the Oswego Lady Bucs soccer team finished its season losing to number two seed CBA 3-1.

The Oswego High School Lady Bucs varsity volleyball team likes to keep games interesting. However, the team is on a seven game win streak as it prepares to enter the Section III semifinals on Tuesday at Liverpool High School.

Friday night, in a match highlighted by numerous sustained volleys , the Lady Bucs won 25-22, 25-22 and 25-20 to oust Utica Proctor from post season play.

Coach Ron Ahart watched his team rally in the early going of game number one and battle throughout as the team continued its current winning streak.

Coach Ahart noted, “I thought we had a real balanced attack. We’re always going to have a dominant player in Vanessa (Sheffield), but we have a very good team. A lot of people were hitting the ball and everybody played defense. I thought that was our key.”

Vanessa Sheffield was dominant at the net with 22 kills while adding eight digs, a point block and two aces. Morgan Lavner had nine kills, three assists and seven digs while Cydney Ward had seven kills and two point blocks.

Krisi Stemple finished with 36 assists, three digs and an ace while Jasmine Davis had four kills, two aces, two assists and three digs.

Kelsey Ross finished with nine digs while Katelyn Stevens had four kills, an ace and point block. Laura Naron also had a half dozen digs for the Bucs

Liverpool will provide another challenge as the Warriors have lost just once in 17 games and are seeded number two. However, Oswego’s 14-3 record, and third seeding, is also very notable. Oswego is coming off the league title run and the Lady Bucs have provided Coach Ron Ahart with the first league crown of his career.

Oswego and Liverpool will square off at 6 on Tuesday.

Lady Bucs Soccer Comes to End

The quarterfinals of the Section III Class AA girls soccer saw Oswego square off against second seeded CBA.

The Bucs gave CBA a s battle as CBA scored the first goal 26 minutes into the first half as Elizabeth Webber tallied off a corner kick.

Oswego quickly came back to knot it up as Amber Earl scored to finish off a Taylor Phillips free kick.

However, with five minutes remaining in the half Caitlin MacDonnell gave the home team a one goal lead as she converted on a free kick for a 2-1 halftime edge.

Coach Brian Greene said that Buc goalie Leah Folgherait was brilliant as she finished with 22 saves.

The Lady Bucs soccer team has advanced to the next round of the Section III Class AA Tournament while the boys sustained a heartbreaking loss in the first round of sectional action. Meanwhile, the varsity football team and swimmers scored victories.

The Lady Bucs scored two first half goals and came away with a 2-0 win over Rome Free Academy. The game started slowly, but RFA had the first outstanding chance early in the first half. Oswego’s goalie was caught out of position and a shot rang off the cross bar and rebounded far out into the field to keep the Knights off the board.

However, Nikki Paulhardt and Brittany Kearns got all the scoring the Bucs needed as they scored in the opening half.

In next Leah Folgherait stood tall in net and held the Knights at bay.

On the first goal Paulhardt got the goal, but it was the work of Amanda D’Amico and Taylor Phillips that got the ball into scoring position. On the second goal Courtney Lewis and Phillips got the ball into a crowd and Kearns scored.

Defensively Maia Czarnecki, Kristin Knight, Kathryn Michaud and Sarah Skinner all played solidly while Folgherait came up with 14 saves for the day.

Oswego advances to the next round on Friday at CBA against the number two seeded squad in Class AA.

Buc Boys Heartbroken

Oswego and Rome battled to a 0-0 deadlock at the end of regulation.

The marathon continued with no one able to score in either the first or second overtime. The game was decided by penalty kicks. Each team had five kickers and Oswego’s Antonio Darling scored the lone one for the Bucs as he beat keeper Dominick DiMaggio. However, RFA managed two scores and advanced.

Varsity Football Season Comes to an End

Damian Williams carried 28 times for 317 yards, scored four touchdowns and threw a scoring strike as the Buc varsity football team wrapped up the 2009 season with a 59-26 win over visiting Fowler on Wednesday night.

Ryan Jock and Paul Edson ran for touchdowns as the Bucs rushed for 496 yards. On the receiving end Dan Cirino caught five passes with two ending up in the end zone while Matt Howard also was on the receiving end of a Mike Brown pass for six more points. In the air the Bucs accounted for 108 yards to finish with 604 yards for the evening.

Williams concluded his spectacular high school career with over 4,000 yards rushing in just 22 games.

For the Bucs it was a solid home season as Oswego has now gone 9-0 on its home field over the past two years.

Swimmers Gain Victory

The Oswego Lady Bucs finished off their regular season with a win against Nottingham-Henninger to improve their record to 6-3 in league and 7-4 overall.

The Bucs took first place in eight of the 12 events Tuesday night. Junior Meredith Moshier won the 200 freestyle (2:19.04). Senior Iveliz Lopez placed first in the 200 I.M. (2:31.8) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.06). Junior Mara Parker won the 50 freestyle in a time of 26.72. Freshman Chrissy Abare placed second the 50 free with a Sectional qualifying time of 27.72, and she won the 500 freestyle in another personal best time and Sectional time of 6:01.98. Senior Laura O’Brien won the diving event, with 8th grader Carrie Gilbert right behind her getting second. Eighth grader Hailey Ihlow dove well enough to garner 4th place honors for the Bucs. Senior Lindsay Johnson won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:14.44.

Some other notable swims were turned in by eighth grader Catie Geroux, who helped Oswego put up the top 4 times in the 50 freestyle (29.67) and went first and second with Lindsay Johnson in the 100 butterfly (1:16.73). Sophomore Kaylie Allen also had a great meet. She swam an outstanding 50 butterfly (34.9) and 100 butterfly (1:22.58). Freshman Shanley Branch also had a great 100 butterfly (1:27.2) and 100 breaststroke. Eighth grader Hailey Ihlow also had a great meet, just missing her best score for the diving event and helping Oswego finish 1st, 2nd, and 4th, out of 6 divers.

Coach Josh Lerch said, “I thought that we swam well tonight. Those that hadn’t made Sectional’s yet got to rest for the meet and they swam and dove really well. Those that had already made it were not rested and still swam well, especially Chrissy Abare and Pulaski’s Breann Burns. Now we’re looking forward to Sectional’s in a week to see what the 13 girls that will be going can do when they’ve rested.”

Boys Jayvee Volleyball Results

Oswego lost to Baldwinsville 25-20 and 25-13, but was able to win the middle game 25-10. Brennan Richardson had a solid passing and digging game, but momentum never swung the Bucs way.

Against Liverpool, Oswego fell 25-18 and 25-22. Connor Riley was unstoppable in the middle while Mike Ruggio played a solid hitting game for the Bucs.

The Bucs then fell to Cicero-North Syracuse 25-16 and 25-18. Defense picked up and blockers Connor Riley and Justin Peterson dominated at the net, but serving errors hampered the Bucs.

Central Square and Oswego had a good battle with the Red Hawks winning 25-20 before falling 25-18 and the Bucs fell 25-18 in the final game as the season concluded for the 5-8 Bucs. It was a solid effort. Dylan Lavner played far above expectations as a first year player and hit, served and dug balls all over the court. Jack Crouch was very consistent from the setting position. It has been a long drought for the Oswego Lady Bucs volleyball program since its last league championship in 1989-1990. 

But the Lady Bucs completed an improbable six game sweep to end the regular season and won the CNYCL American League Championship last night.  Oswego defeated Nottingham 25-16, 25-21, and 25-22 to clinch the league title.  The girls finished 11-2 in the league and 13-3 overall.

Coach Ron Ahart said, “The girls stated before summer started that they wanted to win a league title and put a plan in place to accomplish it.  They worked on fitness at Port City Performance twice a week which made us stronger and more fit.  They also attended camps, summer leagues, and open gyms. The end result is this championship.”

In set one Nottingham started tough, but Oswego rallied back to win 25-16.  Vanessa Sheffield (5 kills) lead the way followed by Stemple (7 assists), Morgan Lavner (1 kill, 1 ace), and Cydney Ward (1 kill, 1 ace). Kelsey Ross added 4 digs.

In set two, Oswego stayed tough and prevailed 25-21. Sheffield again lead the hit parade with 5 kills.  Also helping offensively were Ward (2 kills), Lavner (2 kills), Stevens (2 aces), and Stemple (9 assists).

In the final set, Oswego sensed victory and a championship and closed out the Lady Bulldogs 25-22. Once again Sheffield (6 kills) powered Oswego with Maggie Mooney getting 5 assists. 

Also playing well in support of the team were Laura Naron, Sarah Fox, and Lauren Corradino.

Ahart also noted, “I am very proud to be the Coach of this team. Despite having a dominate player the girls understand that teamwork was the key to our success throughout the season.  We now look forward to sectionals where we expect to be a number 3 seed.”

The Oswego Lady Bucs volleyball team won their fifth match in a row over Henninger 25-20, 25-10, and 29-27.                

Ahart noted, “It was a good win because all the girls could play and contribute to the win.  The win also allowed us to stay in first place.”

In set one, Oswego won 25-20.  Vanessa Sheffield (7 kills) and Krisi Stemple (9 assists) lead Oswego to the win.

In set two, Oswego won handily 25-10. Sheffield (6 kills, 3 aces) again lead Oswego followed by Morgan Lavner (3 kills, 2 aces), and Maggie Mooney (8 assists).

In the final set Oswego faced a tough challenge from the Lady Knights but prevailed 29-27.  Jasmine Davis (4 kills), Cydney Ward (4 kills), Kelsey Ross (4 kills, 1 ace), Laura Naron (2 kills, 2 aces), and Maggie Mooney (12 assists) helped the Lady Bucs seal the win.          Buc Swimmers Hold Off Bees

The Oswego Lady Bucs held off a strong Baldwinsville team Friday night to claim victory in the final home meet of the season. T

he Bucs were led by event winners Michaela Auer (200 I.M. 2:28.88 and 100 breaststroke 1:12.80), Haley Annal (100 fly 1:08.35), Mara Parker (100 free 58.29), and Carrie Gilbert (diving 177.50 points). Haley Annal, Michaela Auer, Iveliz Lopez, Mara Parker, and Chrissy Abare all contributed to wins in the 200 yard medley relay (2:00.94) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.98).

Kaylie Allen, Shanley Branch, Kaila McClelland, and Michaela Kearns also had some impressive relay swims. Meredith Moshier qualified for Sectional’s in a second event, the 500 freestyle (6:14.09), and Michaela Kearns made Sectional’s for the first time in the same event (6:14.48). Other Lady Bucs also had some notable swims. Seniors co-captains Iveliz Lopez, Sarah Miller, Lindsay Johnson, and Laura O’Brien all contributed to the win. Lopez swam an outstanding 50 free (26.99). Miller helped Oswego’s relay teams start the meet out ahead, Johnson swam a great 100 fly (1:12.23) and 100 backstroke (1:13.83), and O’Brien looked great on the diving board (162.55). Sophomore Kaila McClelland helped to 1-2 the 200 I.M. with a time of 2:32.77.

Freshman Chrissy Abare had an outstanding meet, swimming a personal best in the 200 freestyle (2:13.18) and the 50 freestyle (27.38) on the winning 200 freestyle relay. Eighth graders Carrie Gilbert, Catie Geroux, and Hailey Ihlow also were big contributors. Carrie, in addition to winning the diving event, also swam a best time in the 50 freestyle, going 29.24 individually and anchoring the 200 medley relay in a time of 28.82. Catie swam a personal best in the 50 butterfly (32.04) and the 100 butterfly (1:16.41). Ihlow contributed in swimming events, as well as putting up an impressive diving score that was within one point of her best.

Coach Josh Lerch said, “I think that the girls did a wonderful job tonight. We were excited and a bit emotional with it being our senior night, and I think that the team did everything that they could to make it memorable. We really enjoy swimming against Baldwinsville, as they are always competitive and they get closer and closer to beating us each year. Now we are looking forward to Tuesday’s meet at Nottingham to warm-up for the Sectional meet that we will be attending there in two weeks.”

The Oswego Lady Bucs were able to defeat the Liverpool Warriors 97-89 on Wednesday night for the first time in nearly a decade.

Lerch said, “We took the lead early and were able to hold it from the third event on. So many girls stepped up tonight to make this victory possible.”

Senior Iveliz Lopez had a great meet, winning both the 200 I.M. (2:27.08) and the 100 freestyle (59.65), as well as helping both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relays claim victory. Junior Michaela Auer had a similar meet, winning both the 50 freestyle (26.93) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.95), in addition to helping the same two relays put up the fastest times. Also winning an individual event was junior Haley Annal. Haley touched first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:07.91.

Many other girls on the team also contributed greatly to the victory. Freshman Chrissy Abare helped Iveliz Lopez 1-2 the 100 freestyle by putting up a Sectional Qualifying time of 1:00.79. Sophomore Michaela Kearns swam impressive personal best times in both the 200 freestyle (2:20.82) and the 500 freestyle (6:17.68). Eighth grader Carrie Gilbert dove well, and also swam her fastest time in the 50 freestyle (29.18) to place in the event. Senior Lindsay Johnson swam a great 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, equaling or exceeding her previous inseason best times in the events. Freshman Shanley Branch dropped an impressive three seconds in her 100 breaststroke.

Lerch said, “I could go through and mention each and every girl on this team, because that is what it took to win this meet, a team that pushed each other each day in practice and then reaped the rewards in competition. We are excited about the win and we’re gearing up to meet a tough Baldwinsville team on Friday and then Nottingham on Tuesday to finish our regular season.”

Boys Varsity Soccer Wins

The Oswego Varsity Boys Soccer team traveled to Rome on Thursday afternoon for a league show down with the Black Knights and came away with a 2-1 win.

For most of the first half much of the action of the game happened in the middle of the field. Neither team seemed to be able to take control of the game, and as a result there were few opportunities at either goal. All that changed when with just over three minutes to play in the have Frank Mallace found Nick Angelicola free with a pass. Angelicola took a touch and let loose a shot that beat Oswego goalie Matt Skinner to the far post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.Oswego came out in the second half with a renewed sense of urgency and quickly began to take control of the game. With just 10 minutes gone in the half Ryan Ramsey beat Rome keeper Dominick DiMaggio to a loose ball along the side of the Rome 18 yard box. Ramsey was able to send the ball across the 18 to an open Pat Holland who made the most of an open goal opportunity to tie the game at one. Just five minutes later Holland found himself free along the end line and fed a pass to Aaron Marsallo who beat DiMaggio to the near post to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead. As the second half progressed Rome continued to up the pressure on the Buc goal, only to be thwarted again and again by Skinner. While Skinner finished with 7 saves many of them came late in the contest as Rome pushed for the tying goal.

Coach Don Fronk said, “This was a big win for us as it will determine some of the placements in Sectionals when the seedings come out on Sunday. We were flat in the first half, but made some mental and tactical changes at halftime to increase our level of intensity in the second half. Once we took the lead our defensive unit of Wes Ihlow, Joe Hart, Jeff Schmidt and Jamie Reynolds took over and did everything they could to limit Rome’s chances. Any chances they did have Skinner came up big on.”

On Senior Night, the seniors paved the way for the Oswego varsity boys soccer team’s 3-1 victory over visiting West Genesee.

Senior Pat Holland netted two goals, senior Eric Witmer scored the other, and senior goalkeeper Josh Baer made nine saves as the Bucs put on quite a show for the fans at Turrill Street Field.

Also honored on Senior Night were Ryan Ramsey, Nate Pacheco, Antonio Darling, Jeff Schmidt, Brandon DeSantis, Wesley Ihlow, Joe Hart, James Reynolds, Ricky Wallace, Kevin Suchnicki, and Otavio Vianna.

“I thought we played well,” Oswego coach Don Fronk said. “We needed our seniors to step up if we were going to win tonight. It was their night, and they did it. The seniors came through for us.”

Wallace earned two assists and Darling had one for Oswego (5-6 league, 7-7 overall). Early in the game, Ihlow made a huge defensive play to keep the game at 0-0. A high hop sent the ball over Baer’s head, and the ball seemed destined to find the back of the net. Out of nowhere, the speedy Ihlow raced back and cleared the ball away before it crossed the goal line. He was credited with a save.

“Wes clearing that ball off the line, that’s a game-changer right there,” Fronk said. “That could have changed the whole momentum of the game. For him to do that early on was big.”

Minutes later, Oswego took a 1-0 lead. Wildcat starting goalkeeper Dylan Condon came out of his net and attempted to clear the ball. It deflected off a hard-charging Darling. Witmer settled the ball and nailed a shot to the right corner of the net with Condon out of position, and it was 1-0.

Although the Bucs dominated play for the rest of the first half, they did not add to their lead. Condon stopped a hard shot by Pacheco. Later, Pacheco sent a couple of free kicks toward the goal, and Holland just missed redirecting them into the net.

Late in the half, the Bucs had a couple of corner kick opportunities, but did not score. Just 2:12 into the second half, Oswego tallied its second goal. Holland converted off a throw-in, with Wallace assisting.

Schmidt made several nice plays to clear the ball out of danger in the Buccaneer zone as the Blue and White kept their advantage.

Holland notched his second goal off a feed from Wallace. With had his back to the goal, Holland accepted the pass, turned, and fired it high into the net.

The Bucs kept up the pressure, but couldn’t come up with the knockout blow.

“When we got to 3-0, if we could have gotten one more, that would have done it. We would have closed it out,” Fronk said.

Instead, the Wildcats (2-14) kept working. It led to a goal with 19:41 remaining. Jake Sutherland headed in a cross from Stefanos Stamoulacatos.

Now with some momentum of its own, West Genesee turned up the pressure. Baer was required to make some leaping saves, including some in heavy traffic.

“Josh played well tonight,” Fronk said. “He came up with saves when we needed him to make saves.”

The work of the seniors and the rest of the Bucs is not done. Continuing to tune up for the Section III Class AA playoffs, Oswego’s next game will be Thursday at Rome.

Girls Cross Country Runs Well

With three Lady Buc runners earning All League honors, the Oswego girls cross country team, turned in an outstanding performance at the CNYCL American League Cross Country Championships held on the P.V. Moore High School Athletic Complex course in Central Square.

Leading the Lady Bucs was sophomore Mackenzie Robinson, who lowered her previous course best by over a minute, with a fast time of 21:37, to finish 13th overall for Oswego, in a very competitive field that included the three time National Champion Lady Hornets of Fayetteville Manlius, and the Lady Wildcats of West Genesee, currently ranked 16th in the state.

" Mackenzie is having another terrific season" said Coach Jim McCaul " She has earned her success through her hard work, dedication, and commitment."

Senior standouts Eliza Parker and Brittany Ross also earned All League honors for Oswego, based on their fine championship performances. Parker ran a personal best time of 22:45, with a furious finishing kick. to lower her previous course best by 52 seconds, placing second for Oswego, with Ross also lowering her previous course best by 36 seconds, with a fine time of 22:54, to place third for the Lady Bucs.

Sophomore Taylor Giglio, hampered by a leg injury, ran a strong time of 23:08, to place 4th for the Lady Bucs followed by sophomore Mikayla Place, junior Lexi Gillard, and senior Bridgette Auyer, who turned in a course best.

Oswego placed a strong fifth teamwise in the race, with a low of 130 points, with Fayetteville Manlius, currently the top ranked team in the nation, placing first with a low of 17 points.

Rapidly improving junior Michelle Champagne, led the Lady Bucs in the Varsity II race, shattering her previous course best by over three minutes, to finish 20th overall, with a fine season best time of 24:21. Senior Katie Abramski, ran a very strong race from start to finish, to place second for Oswego, followed by emerging freshmen Kaela Shafer, who lowered her previous course best by over three minutes. Other strong efforts for the Lady Bucs, were turned in by sophomore Marycatherine Rice, and seniors Rachel Demling and Danielle Posillipo. Oswego scored a low of 260, to finish 5th overall in this race.

The Lady Bucs will close out a very successful season on Saturday November 7th, returning to Jamesville Beach County Park, site of this year's Chittenango Invitational, for the Section III Cross Country Championships, in a race that will feature many of the top ranked teams in the section and the state. " We are running very well as a team and I think we are going to surprise a few teams that beat us earlier in the season" said McCaul.

Lady Bucs Win on Senior Night Senior co-captains Taylor Phillips and Amanda D’Amico combined for two goals and an assist as the Oswego Lady Buccaneers varsity soccer team steamrolled the Black Knights of Rome Free Academy, 3-0, Thursday in a rain-soaked CNYCL American tilt at Turrill Street Field.

Before the game, Phillips and D’Amico—along with nine of their fellow senior teammates—celebrated the twilight of their Oswego soccer careers with a tear-filled Senior Night ceremony. D’Amico, Phillips, Maia Czarnecki, Amber Earl, Alexis Files, Leah Folgherait, Rachel Healy, Kristin Knight, Kathryn Michaud, Nicole Paulhardt, and Sarah Skinner were all recognized.

All 11 seniors started the game on the field as the rain began pouring down. “It was pretty neat and special, I thought, to start 11 seniors,” said Oswego head coach Brian Greene.

For Greene, what sets this group of graduates apart is what they bring to the table not only as soccer players, but as hard-working students and proud members of the school community. “They’re unbelievable students, they’re active in all facets of the school life, and I just think that what they’ve provided (for themselves) is a foundation. Whatever they’re going to go on to, they’re going to succeed at,” he said with certainty. “They’ll take what they got from athletics and school and they’ll take it into the real world and be successful. I’m proud of them.”

After raindrops replaced teardrops and the teams took the pitch, Oswego’s co-captains joined forces to open the scoring for Oswego (9-6-1) early on. Phillips sent a service toward the goal on a free kick from outside the left corner of the box. The wet ball slipped through the grasp of RFA senior keeper Karina Swanson and D’Amico was stationed on the far post to put the finishing touches on the scoring opportunity. The goal gave Oswego a 1-0 advantage with 30:20 still to play in the first half. Sophomore Kaitlyn Armstrong and classmate Brittany Kearns combined to score the second goal for Oswego.

Armstrong pounded a quality shot from outside the box that required a diving save from Swanson, who just managed to push the ball aside. Kearns took advantage of the loose ball, depositing the rebound easily into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead 17:41 before halftime.

The final tally came on a penalty kick from Phillips only 4:30 into the second half. D’Amico drew the foul after she slipped past her marker and into the left side of the box. Phillips capitalized by pounding a perfect shot, low and left, past Swanson’s diving grasp.

Folgherait was solid between the posts for Oswego, despite the poor conditions. She recorded 11 saves.

Swanson finished with eight stops for the Knights (7-9). Greene credited Earl for her work in the center midfield and said his defense, led by Czarnecki, Knight, and Michaud, was solid all game long. They never let a loose ball slip behind them for an easy scoring opportunity and turned away most of the opposition’s offensive pressure. Michaud, in particular, has been putting on a defensive clinic for the last few games. “She settled everything down and she made good passes and was very composed,” Greene said of Michaud.

With such a positive end to the regular season, Greene said his squad would need to draw up the same amount of passion and intensity for their first sectional game.

“Just take the momentum and the energy (into sectionals),” Greene said. “When you play with that emotion, good things happen.”

The Bucs find out who their next opponent is Sunday night, once the seeding for sectional play is complete.

The Oswego varsity boys volleyball team outlasted visiting Fowler to earn a 3-2 victory on Wednesday in Powers Gymnasium at Leighton Elementary School.

The Bucs won the marathon match 25-21, 21-25, 25-12, 23-25, 26-24.

It didn’t look good for Oswego late in game five. A kill by the Falcons’ Luis Ramos gave Fowler a 23-21 lead. The Falcons then moved within a point of winning the match at 24-22.

The home team rallied led by senior Ian VanWert, who hammered a spike for a point, then won two straight points with hard serves. A terrific save by the Bucs’ John Oleyourryk led to the final point of the match in the 26-24 finale.

“I think at the end they actually started to focus,” Oswego coach Mike Shea said. “I think a lot of the match they assumed they were going to win, and didn’t focus, and started making a lot of mistakes. Defensively, this was actually a really good night for us.” Team captains VanWert and Oleyourryk were two of the program’s seniors honored on Senior Night. The others were Tom Ruggio, Anthony Samson, Rudy Rodriguez, Elliott Singleton, and manager Mike Johnson.

Shea said the veterans like VanWert and Oleyourryk were strong players. Some others were not as experienced, but gave their all and showed a lot of progress. Shea said he wished he could have had more time to work with them.

“We’re going to miss these guys,” Shea said of the seniors.

Sophomore Kevin Carpentier tallied six kills, 36 assists, 10 digs, and three aces for the Bucs (4-10).

Other statistical leaders were Rich Carpentier (5 kills, 4 digs, 1 block, 2 aces), Cooper Harse (3 kills, 2 digs, 2 aces), Oleyourryk (8 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs, 2 aces), Ryan Patrick (3 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace), Rodriguez (3 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace), Ruggio (8 digs, 1 ace), Samson (9 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces), Singleton (2 kills), Mike Thompson (4 kills, 1 block), and VanWert (5 kills, 1 assist, 3 digs, 2 blocks, 4 aces). For Fowler (1-9), Anthony Wright finished with an ace, seven kills, and 14 assists. Other leaders were Brad Addison (2 aces, 2 kills, 1 block), Dwayne Dornford (1 kill, 2 blocks, 1 assist), Malcom Jones (6 kills, 3 blocks, 1 assist), Ramos (3 aces, 5 kills, 2 blocks), Angel Menjivar (1 kill, 2 assists), and Luis Rivera (2 aces, 1 kill).

Game one was close until the final few points. After an ace by Fowler’s Addison tied it at 18-18, the Bucs took the lead for good. VanWert nailed a kill and served an ace, then Kevin Carpentier set up a Rodriguez spike to make it 23-19. An ace by Oleyourryk closed out the game, 25-21.

Fowler took control in the second half of the second game. Wright’s hitting and Buccaneer errors figured prominently in the 25-21 Falcon win.

A dominating performance in game three seemed to give Oswego all the momentum. With Kevin Carpentier providing accurate sets, Samson, Rich Carpentier, and Patrick all chipped in with powerful kills as the Bucs rolled, 25-12.

The Falcons never quit. They rebounded with a 25-23 win in the fourth game. Key point blocks by Jones and Ramos were difference-makers for Fowler.

In a thrilling final game, there were 15 ties. The Bucs had to scramble to keep the ball in play against the hard hitting by the Falcons’ front line. Outstanding play by VanWert and Oleyourryk in the final few points pushed the Bucs to the 26-24 win.

While the team did not qualify for the Section III playoffs, it made strides in a transition year. Shea said that with next year’s returning players and others in the program, the future looks bright. (Courtesy of Palladium Times)

Modified Swimmers Victorious

The Oswego girls modified swim team concluded their season 4-3 overall with an 80-69 win over visiting CNS. Colleen Fraser won the 200 Free and 50 Fly. Anne Reynolds won the 50 and 100 Free. Kartina Tafler won the 50 Back. Myra Lopez won the 50 Breast. Brenna Riley, Myra Lopez, Alexis Dingman, and Cassidy Taylor teamed up for the win in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Riley, Tafler, Fraser, and Taylor won the 200 Free Relay.

Representing the 2009 team was Nina Alcasid, Liz Baker, Taylor Bonney, Meredith Chesare, Sam Cutro, Erin Delaney, Madolyn Engle, Kim Korthis, Molly Malone, Allison Mosier, Magie Maas, Monica Randall, Angela Rookey, Danielle Boyzuck, Kali Esden, Asley Sgro, Allison Smith, and Zoe Ferris.

Frosh Football Gains Big Win

The Oswego frosh football team defeated Central Square 46-0 as the Bucs scored 13 in the first quarter and 21 in the second before adding another dozen in the third.

Fred Ferguson and Zach Jadus each scored two touchdowns while Kaleb Astoria and Brent Denny also scored rushing touchdowns while on the receiving end of a scoring strike from Dave Culeton was Josh Jasewicz. Devlin Babcock kicked four extra points.

Jayvee Girls Soccer Active

The Oswego jayvee girls soccer team lost 2-0 to Rome Free. Rome was able to get on the scoreboard first in the middle of the first half as they were able to put in a rebound. The rest of the first half Oswego kept the game even getting some scoring opportunities, which went wide of the net.

The second half the lady Bucs played more of a defensive game as the pressure from the Black Knights made it tough to get it on the offensive end. Rome was able to sneak a goal past goalie Cassie Collins for the 2-0 lead. Collins made some big saves to keep the lady Bucs in the game.

According to Coach Stephen Cass “I thought we played well for how many players we had out to injuries. I think if we had a healthy team, our season could have been different. All the injuries made it tough for the team to get continuity. I am proud of the team and how they progressed through the season.”

The Oswego jayvee girls soccer team lost 2-1 at West Genny. Oswego played a hard fought game in the first half as West Genny scored first to get the 1-0 lead. The Lady Bucs quickly came back to even the score 1-1 as Kayla Sharkey dribbled the ball down the right side and crossed the ball in front of the net where Liz Babcock was able to put the ball away.

In the second half, it went back and forth. With three minutes left in the game, West Genesse was able to score to win the game.

According to Coach Stephen Cass “We had our opportunities to win the game but we weren’t able to finish. I am proud of the girls in how they came back from the goal to even the match. We have had a lot of injuries this season, which has limited our bench, but the girls are coming to play hard each and every game.”

Jayvee Volleyball Finishes Strong

Oswego scored 25-14, 25-8 and 25-8 victories over Nottingham.

Coach Ted Beers said, “I am very happy with our girls not just tonight, but for the whole season.  This was our final match and the girls showed tonight why we finished 12-5.  And just like last night, our girls all got on the board and made contributions.  I have enjoyed watch this group of 14 girls grow as the season went on and it has been a pleasure to coach them.  Tonight’s win just capped off a fun season.”

Against Nottingham Emily Barlow had a kill and ace, Tayler Bowman a kill and dig and Catherine Clancy an ace and five assists. Danielle Faivus had two kills and a dig while Alexa Healy had seven aces and six assists. Emily Henderson and Mackenzie each had a kill. Courtney Lavere had two aces and point block. Rebecca Martin also had four kills, an ace, an assist and point block. Ali McPherson had a kill while Carlie Morley had two kills, four aces and a point block, Cortnie Purce and Sarah Stoebner had a kill each.

Against Henninger Oswego won 25-18 and 25-19.

Barlow had a kill, ace and assist while Bowman finished with two digs and Clancy two assists. Healy had four assists while Henderson had two kills and an ace. King finished with a kill and assist while Lavere had two kills and an ace. Martin came away with two kills, two aces, an assist and point block. McPherson had a kill, three aces and an assist while Morley had two kills, an ace and assist. Purce finished with a kill while Stoebner had three kills and four aces.
