Language Arts
The ELA curriculum works with the Harcourt Reading Series. Each weekly focus story has key comprehension strategies that students are to practice and apply in their independent reading. An example would be using inferences or finding the main idea. These strategies are assessed at the end of the week with a test. Vocabulary words are also introduced in the beginning of the week and reinforced in class by acting out, using in sentences, and/or making comic strips. Students are expected to know these words for the weekly test. Grammar skills are also introduced and practiced throughout the week. These include capitalizing proper nouns, abbreviations, and pronouns. They are assessed throughout the week, but a grade is not taken on mastery of the concept until the end of the week. Phonics skills usually are aligned to the week's spelling list and are practiced in other words besides just the spelling list words. Examples include r controlled verbs, -er and -est words, and -ee words. On Fridays, a weekly agenda is sent home with the skills that are going to be covered in class. If for some reason you or child don't have one, you can click on the link below to see the skills for the upcoming story. Note: The number for the spelling words and story number are during the same week.
