Understanding Language-Stanford University
We are pleased to announce the launch of our website and online community, Understanding Language. We aim to heighten educator awareness of the critical role that language plays in the new Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. The long-term goal of the initiative is to help educators understand that the new Standards cannot be achieved without providing specific attention to the language demands inherent to each content area. We seek to improve academic outcomes for English language learners by drawing attention to critical aspects of instructional practice and by advocating for necessary policy supports at the state and local levels.

Guideline for Awarding Credits for ESL at the High School Level
Awarding ELA Credits for ESL is a district decision. To receive a NYS high school diploma, all LEP/ELLs must obtain a minimum number of units of credit in high school. Students entering 9th grade in 2001 and thereafter, must complete 22.0 units of credit. There is a minimum of 3.4 units of credit in sequence course/electives.
Awarding Credits for Languages Other Than English; Special Ed. and ESL
ESL students may receive credits for knowing another language. ESL programs should be considered general education core instruction for all LEP/ELL students.
