Letter: Open House changes & events update

Sept. 22, 2021

Good afternoon OCSD families and staff,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well as we are a few weeks into the new school year. I have been very impressed with the staff, teachers and students alike in hitting the ground running and setting the bar high for a strong year.

I am writing to share with you updates related to COVID-19, Open House and expectations for elementary and middle school students at district events.

First, we have made the decision for all planned Open Houses to be made virtual due to a locally rising rate of COVID-19, the number of students and staff in quarantine and after consulting the health department, our district’s health director and other area districts regarding their plans for open house.

With this change, the Kingsford Park Elementary Open House planned for the evening of Thursday, Sept. 23 will be rescheduled, and a new date communicated when it is available. At this time other schools are planned to move forward with their open house dates already established, and information about those virtual events will be forthcoming to parents and guardians.

Please know that while we wanted to welcome families inside the buildings, we must be cognizant of what is best for our entire learning community. The health and safety of our students is always our top priority.

Lastly, we have seen at our athletic and other district events an abundance of elementary- and middle school-aged students being dropped off without supervision. For the safety of the students, moving forward, any elementary or middle school parent or guardian must remain on-site during the event and provide supervision for their child(ren).

We thank you for your understanding and anticipated cooperation with these plans. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s building principal.

Yours in Education,
Dr. Mathis Calvin III
Superintendent of Schools
