October 7, 2021 Information
10/7/21
Dear Oswego City School District Community,
I am writing to share that earlier today, Oswego High School administrators received a report that a student had allegedly brought a gun to school some time earlier in the school year and showed it to several students. Immediately after receiving this report, district officials began an investigation in partnership with the Oswego County Sheriff’s School Resource Officer Program and the Oswego Police Department. While doing so, we’ve learned that the student may have brought a BB gun into school at some point earlier in the school year. This investigation is ongoing.
It is important to note that, at this time, our investigation does not demonstrate that any student or staff member is in any danger. Local authorities will continue to work closely with district officials on this matter.
Whenever students bring a weapon of any type into school, they will be subject to discipline, per the district’s code of conduct. Accordingly, the district requests that parents and/or guardians discuss with their children the importance of not bringing in a weapon of any type to school at any time.
We also ask that parents encourage their child(ren) to report any suspicious activity, weapon or threat right away to a school official or a trusted adult. If they do not feel comfortable reporting an incident in-person, they can also report information to the district’s anonymous tip hotline, 315-341-2056, or by posting information to the district tip line, which is available on to the district’s webpage at the following URL: http://www.oswego.org/stopBullying.cfm.
Parents and/or guardians should know that there will be additional police on hand to support students at the High School tomorrow morning and afternoon. Should any parents or guardians have any question or concerns, please feel free to reach out directly to the High School Principal, Mr. Ryan Lanigan at 315-341-2221.
Thank you for your time, efforts and support of our learning community in advance.
Sincerely,
Mathis Calvin III, Ed. D.
Superintendent of Schools
