KPS Launches Student Newspaper Club
Sixth-grade students at Kingsford Park Elementary recently launched a newspaper club to develop their writing, reporting, and teamwork skills while keeping their school community informed.Under the guidance of fifth-grade teacher Michelle Peterson, the club meets after school every-other Tuesday to discuss topics that will appear in the next edition of “The BUC-le,” a monthly publication. Students get hands-on experience in journalism, covering a wide range of topics and school-specific news. Members learn the fundamentals of interviewing, layout, design, and creative storytelling as they work together to produce regular editions.
“We’re thrilled to give our students a platform to share their voices,” said Peterson. “This club encourages creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration — skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.”
Sixth-grader Lola Holman, who was critical in founding the newspaper club, said it has provided her with opportunities to tap into her creativity and her passion for writing.
“I love writing. Ever since I was young, I really wanted to write,” Holman said. “Newspaper club allows me to do that … it helps people express their passions.”
The student newspaper is available to classmates, teachers, and families, fostering a stronger connection within the school community. Editions are available monthly in classrooms and common areas.
“This is a great way for students to explore their interests in writing and media,” Peterson said. “They’re excited to take ownership of their publication and share their perspectives with their peers.”
