OCSD to Implement OpenGate System
The Oswego City School District is taking proactive steps to enhance school safety by implementing OpenGate weapons detection systems, which will soon be unveiled at Oswego High School and Oswego Middle School. The new security measure aims to create a safer learning environment while ensuring a seamless entry process for students and staff. It utilizes advanced screening technology to detect potential threats while allowing for a smooth flow of foot traffic. Unlike traditional metal detectors, OpenGate provides a non-invasive screening process, reducing delays and minimizing disruptions.
“Student and staff safety is our top priority,” said Superintendent Dr. Raymond Kilmer. “These detection systems represent an additional layer of protection for the students and staff of Oswego CSD. We want to assure you that we are doing everything within our means to safeguard those entrusted to us.”
The district will utilize its School Resource Officers (SROs) as well as staff members to operate the technology and monitor foot traffic, ensuring that the transition is smooth and efficient. The OpenGate systems will be placed at entrances and locations that students and visitors use, allowing for quick and effective screening of individuals entering the buildings.
The system is similar to those used at concerts and sporting events at stadiums and other venues across the country.
