A new social-emotional learning program has made its way to Oswego Middle School to shed light on individualized behavioral and conflict management strategies for seventh- and eighth-grade OCSD students.
Led by the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau’s Tiffany Halstead and Kristen Slimmer, Proactive and Restorative Options for Students (PROS) is a research-based approach to better understand students’ behaviors and – more importantly – to proactively problem-solve issues through relationships with students as part of the process of activating effective solutions.
PROS also aims to avoid traditional punitive models and instead encourages students to reflect on their behaviors.

The Oswego City School District Board of Education will be conducting an Audit Committee meeting and a regular board meeting on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 starting at 4 p.m.

OMS students compete in 2022 Battle of the Books:
Six teams of Oswego Middle School students participated in this year's "Battle of the Books" competition.
The "Battle of the Books" is a reading program coordinated by Oswego Middle School's library media specialist, Mrs. Brennan-Steere, and is designed to encourage the reading of a variety of literature. Parents and faculty members served as coaches for the competing students.
In this competition, 7th and 8th grade students read a group of eight titles and competed in teams of 2-4 to answer questions in a quiz show format. All questions began with the words, “In which book…?”

OHS senior wrestler receives Hawke-Pettinelli Scholarship Award:
At the conclusion of the 2021-2022 wrestling season, Oswego wrestling senior Wayne Earl Jr. received the Hawke-Pettinelli Scholarship Award, presented by the Syracuse Wrestling Officials Association.
This scholarship is in recognition of the contribution to the central New York wrestling community from Reed Hawke and Lou Pettinelli. The award recognizes a senior who has been a member of a central New York wrestling program and been a positive reflection of the wrestling community. Candidates must complete an application and go through an interview process to be selected for this award.

OHS National Honor Society chapter members sign letters for St. Jude’s:
The Oswego High School National Honor Society chapter has continued its partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee to help treat childhood cancer, as well as to fund necessary research in hopes of finding cures.
“The mission of St. Jude has continued to inspire chapter members to be called to service and raise funds for the hospital through a letter-writing campaign to friends and family,” NHS advisor and Oswego High School social studies teacher Kayley Morse said.

OCSD now accepting Universal Pre-K applications for 2022-23:
The Oswego City School District is now accepting applications for Universal Pre-K (UPK) classes for the 2022-2023 school year. The program is free to all children residing within the district who turn 4 years old by Dec. 1, 2022.
There are 8 half-day sessions and 1 full-day session. The half-day sessions are offered in the Kingsford, Minetto, Fitzhugh and Riley elementary schools. Morning sessions are 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon sessions are 12:45 to 3:15 p.m. The full-day session is 9 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. at Frederick Leighton Elementary School. Busing is available, courtesy of district drivers, on their regular bus runs in the morning and afternoon. Please note that there is no mid-day busing.

OHS Boiler Repaired- Normal schedule to resume:

Dear Oswego High School Families,
After discovering an issue with the boiler used to heat the high school last Sunday, crews have been working on repairs so our students and staff can return safely to the building. I am pleased to announce that, as of this afternoon, the boiler is back in operation and classes will resume in-person, as scheduled, tomorrow morning.
We sincerely appreciate the flexibility of our families, students and staff members throughout the past week. As always, we thank you for your understanding during these challenging times, and we are looking forward to seeing our high school students back in the classroom tomorrow.

Dear Oswego High School families,
While repair work is underway on external lines that support our boilers, repair crews are estimating that the heating issue may not be resolved until later this week.
In order to allow families to make arrangements and give students some certainty around their schedule, we have decided to utilize our fully remote model for the remainder of this week. All Oswego High School students will report to class remotely per their regular schedule for Thursday, March 3 and Friday, March 4.
CiTi BOCES students will still be picked up and transported per the schedule that has run the past couple of days.

OHS remote 3/2 and boiler update:

Dear Oswego High School families,
I am writing to inform you that due to the ongoing boiler issue causing heat problems, students at Oswego High School will learn remotely on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.
We do have good news to report, as the problem has been identified in lines leading to the boiler and repair work is underway to resolve the issue. It is estimated that the work will be complete by Wednesday evening, and we would aim to have students back in schools Thursday.
Should further problems arise, an extension of remote learning further into the week is possible. I will be in touch with more information Wednesday.

Good evening Oswego City School District families,
The district has received a number of calls concerning the plan regarding masking when Gov. Kathy Hochul’s statewide mandate in schools expires on Wednesday.
The Board of Education and I will be meeting on Tuesday, March 1 at 5 p.m. in the Leighton Elementary multipurpose room/cafeteria for one of our monthly business meetings, and we intend to discuss the issue of masks as it pertains to district policy and procedure.
Please also know that we have learned there will be additional official guidance released by the state pertaining to masking, and we intend to use this in our Board of Education discussion and present it to the community along with decisions that are made.

OHS remote 3/1 due to boiler issue:

Dear Oswego High School Families,
As I wrote regarding yesterday, there is currently issues with the boiler used to heat the high school. While the hope was to return to school tomorrow, we now understand that the issue will require us to utilize our remote model on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 as well. Our plan is for students to utilize their normal instructional schedule beginning at 7:30 a.m. but in a remote capacity.
Any students who attend CiTi BOCES programming in the morning will be picked up as normal. Afternoon CiTi students will be contacted by the transportation department with a home pick-up time.
