OCSD celebrates Coaches Appreciation Days:
Oswego City School District recently honored its coaches during the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s (NYSPHSAA) Coaches Appreciation Days.
At the Oswego Middle School on Jan. 13, Principal Mary Beth Fierro celebrated the coaches in the building for their contributions to the athletic program. Several coaches wore their Buccaneer Blue and each received a “thank you” note in their mailbox.
“We are incredibly grateful to have such an amazing coaching staff,” said OCSD Athletic Director Rhonda Bullard. “Our coaches truly care about the student-athletes and provide them with fun, engaging experiences to develop both mentally and physically. We are so thankful for the role they play in our OCSD athletic program.”

OMS honors students for gratitude:
At Oswego Middle School, the spotlight characteristic for November was gratitude and the school honored several students who exude and display this character trait.
"These student leaders help to make our OMS community a better place,” said Principal Mary Beth Fierro. “Their good character is appreciated and is an inspiration to everyone. Congratulations and keep up the great work!”

SUNY Offers COVID Testing to Community:
With testing serving as a critical tool in diagnosing and stopping the spread of COVID-19, members of the community now have an additional testing site available at SUNY Oswego.
Oswego City School District students, staff and community members may utilize the new testing site, located in "The Space" on the north side of the Marano Campus Center off Rudolph Road. Plan to park in Lot E-17.
The site is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tests 225 people a day, with 50 walk-ins allowed. Results are emailed within 24-48 hours.

Tomorrow morning, January 11, 2022, the district is planning to reopen all schools and programs, including all CiTi CTE and specialized programs, athletics (note, all teams have been cleared to resume) and extracurricular activities.
As we are preparing to do so, and with winter weather fully upon us, we wanted to encourage parents and guardians to ensure your child is bundled up with weather-appropriate clothing while waiting for the bus or walking to school. Good afternoon OCSD families and community,
With COVID numbers and quarantines nearing 100 in total across the district, staffing and operations at Oswego City School District have been impacted. As of Thursday, more than 70 instructional staff members were out due to sickness, quarantine or other reasons with dozens more from transportation, nursing and other critical departments also unable to report. Because of this, we must alter our schedule for the next few days as follows.
Due to anticipated weather concerns for tomorrow along with a rise in COVID-related staffing issues, Oswego City School District will call an emergency/snow day on Friday, Jan. 7. No students or staff will report and there will be no classes virtually or otherwise. ...

HS National Honor Society gives back during holidays:
Throughout the month of December, the Oswego High School National Honor Society collected toiletry items for the Human Concerns of Oswego Food Pantry. Human Concerns provides needed items from local families free of charge, especially food and toiletries.
This is the fifth year that the club has held this collection and each year we have been able to exceed what we donated the previous year. With the help of OHS juniors Addyson St. Onge and Clara Back, who served as the event chairs for this donation drive, the OHS National Honor Society was able to donate over 300 toiletry items.

NYS Governor Kathy Hochul, recently informed superintendents that the state is sending COVID-19 rapid test kits to all school districts to distribute to their families. These tests may be administered by families as soon as they receive them to help prevent COVID-positive asymptomatic individuals from returning to school.

As we see a dramatic rise in case numbers across Oswego County, health officials are learning of an increased interest in vaccinations. Information regarding how to access first-time vaccine clinics is available below.

I am writing to share information on our return to “in-person” learning plans for next week. On next Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, the district will be reopening all of our schools. Accordingly, all students should report to school for instruction.
Aside from this, throughout the winter break the district received several calls from parents and/or guardians who are interested in transporting their students to and from school. The Oswego City School District will be conducting a Public Hearing to discuss the District Safety Plan starting at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021 with the Board of Education regular meeting immediately following.

Leighton students shine in first concert:
Music filled the Faust Theater for Performing arts on Dec. 14, as some of the Oswego City School District’s youngest musicians took the stage.
Frederick Leighton Elementary students showcased their talents during the concert, featuring the boys’ chorus and beginning band. The chorus members kicked off the evening with “Carol Medley” and concluded their portion of the concert with “Jingle Bell Rock” to get the audience into the holiday spirit.
The beginning band members picked up where the chorus left off, as they shared what they had learned so far this year. They performed “Whole Note Blast Off,” “Quarter Note Rock,” “At Pete’s Door,” “Down the Chimney with Care” and “Hot Cross Buns.” ...

OHS Students Show Holiday Spirit Through Volunteerism:
Oswego High School students are spreading holiday cheer this season, as several clubs, athletic teams and organizations recently volunteered their time with the Salvation Army.
Members of the student council and JV girls’ basketball team spent a Saturday afternoon ringing the bell for the Red Kettle Campaign, which funds a variety of projects aimed at helping those who are less fortunate. For the students, club advisors and coaches who volunteered, the effort proved to be a rewarding experience.
“We rang the bell, handed out candy canes, sang Christmas carols and wore matching pajamas as a full team,” JV girls’ basketball coach Ryan Lavner said. “We had a lot of fun together, and it was for a great cause.”

I am writing to share some concerns of note the district is experiencing and some changes to our operations that we will employ beginning next Monday, Dec. 13, 2021.
Transportation
Throughout this week, the district had a high number of transportation staff who were out, due to illness and other concerns. As a result, the district transportation operations were strained as we are seeing with many similar districts around upstate New York.

OMS students recognized for outstanding efforts in Q1:
Dozens of Oswego Middle School students were recently honored by what administrators called outstanding all-around efforts in the first quarter of the 2021-2022 school year.
To receive this honor, students had to achieve perfect attendance, outstanding behavior, and pass all classes. Students who earned this honor will be recognized on the OMS Student Recognition Wall in the Main Hallway.
"The students at Oswego Middle School have worked very hard this fall getting back into the routine of full-time in-person school,” said OMS Principal Mary Beth Fierro. “We are very proud of all of them and appreciate the support and encouragement their families have given the school during this challenging time."

Oswego High School National Honor Society fundraises to help fight pediatric cancer:
Oswego High School National Honor Society recently wrapped up its annual “No Shave November” fundraiser in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“No Shave November” has been an important fundraiser for the OHS National Honor Society since the 2011-2012 school year, and the money donated will help fund the fight to eradicate pediatric cancer.
A total of 11 teachers participated in “No Shave November” while others helped collect donations. This year, donations reached $867.92, which is the highest amount in the event’s history. Nearly half the total stemmed from custodial staff member Bradley Wygant’s fundraising efforts, which netted $400 toward the cause.

Minetto Elementary participates in “Turkey Disguise”:
Mrs. Perry’s second grade class from Minetto Elementary School participated in a “Turkey Disguise” videoconference alongside students from Hewlett Elementary School located on Long Island.
In similar style to the board game “Guess Who?” students asked one another questions about their local communities, classrooms, school day and each turkey they designed. Students used their deductive reasoning skills and a grid to determine which turkey the other class picked.
“The students asked fantastic questions of each other and had a great time learning about life on Long Island and in Minetto. It was a wonderful experience and gave our students a chance to make new friends virtually,” said Kim LeRoy, library media specialist.

Oswego Middle School students earn academic honors for Q1:
Dozens of Oswego Middle School students recently achieved honor or high honor roll status upon completion of the first marking period.
Principal Mary Beth Fierro commended each student for their hard work and commitment shown throughout the first few months of the 2021-2022 school year. Students who achieved an overall average of 85 to 92.99 were named to the honor roll, while high honor was awarded to students who achieved an average of 93 or higher.

Oswego High School students in the Criminal Justice course recently learned about community policing strategies and other topics during an in-class field trip featuring members of local government and law enforcement.
City of Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow, Oswego Police Chief Phillip Cady and Capt. Damian Waters shared their opinions and experiences regarding topics such as bail reform, police funding, initiatives to help the homeless and quality-of-life issues within the community.
