OHS Students Show Holiday Spirit Through Volunteerism OHS Students Show Holiday Spirit Through Volunteerism: Oswego High School students are spreading holiday cheer this season, as several clubs, athletic teams and organizations recently volunteered their time with the Salvation Army. Members of the student council and JV girls’ basketball team spent a Saturday afternoon ringing the bell for the Red Kettle Campaign, which funds a variety of projects aimed at helping those who are less fortunate. For the students, club advisors and coaches who volunteered, the effort proved to be a rewarding experience. “We rang the bell, handed out candy canes, sang Christmas carols and wore matching pajamas as a full team,” JV girls’ basketball coach Ryan Lavner said. “We had a lot of fun together, and it was for a great cause.”

Transportation Throughout this week, the district had a high number of transportation staff who were out, due to illness and other concerns. As a result, the district transportation operations were strained as we are seeing with many similar districts around upstate New York. Consequently, the district employed a series of timely procedures, which included: combining some of our transportation runs and postponing and/or rescheduling some of our extracurricular and athletic contests. OMS students recognized for outstanding efforts in Q1 OMS students recognized for outstanding efforts in Q1: Dozens of Oswego Middle School students were recently honored by what administrators called outstanding all-around efforts in the first quarter of the 2021-2022 school year.   To receive this honor, students had to achieve perfect attendance, outstanding behavior, and pass all classes. Oswego High School National Honor Society fundraises to help fight pediatric cancer Oswego High School National Honor Society fundraises to help fight pediatric cancer: Oswego High School National Honor Society recently wrapped up its annual “No Shave November” fundraiser in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.   “No Shave November” has been an important fundraiser for the OHS National Honor Society since the 2011-2012 school year, and the money donated will help fund the fight to eradicate pediatric cancer.   A total of 11 teachers participated in “No Shave November” while others helped collect donations. This year, donations reached $867.92, which is the highest amount in the event’s history. Nearly half the total stemmed from custodial staff member Bradley Wygant’s fundraising efforts, which netted $400 toward the cause.   “Thank you to all who participated ...
Minetto Elementary participates in “Turkey Disguise” Minetto Elementary participates in “Turkey Disguise”: Mrs. Perry’s second grade class from Minetto Elementary School participated in a “Turkey Disguise” videoconference alongside students from Hewlett Elementary School located on Long Island.   In similar style to the board game “Guess Who?” students asked one another questions about their local communities, classrooms, school day and each turkey they designed. Students used their deductive reasoning skills and a grid to determine which turkey the other class picked.   “The students asked fantastic questions of each other and had a great time learning about life on Long Island and in Minetto. Oswego Middle School students earn academic honors for Q1 Oswego Middle School students earn academic honors for Q1: Dozens of Oswego Middle School students recently achieved honor or high honor roll status upon completion of the first marking period.   Principal Mary Beth Fierro commended each student for their hard work and commitment shown throughout the first few months of the 2021-2022 school year. Oswego High School Students have “in-school” field trip Oswego High School Students have “in-school” field trip: Oswego High School students in the Criminal Justice course recently learned about community policing strategies and other topics during an in-class field trip featuring members of local government and law enforcement.   City of Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow, Oswego Police Chief Phillip Cady and Capt. Damian Waters shared their opinions and experiences regarding topics such as bail reform, police funding, initiatives to help the homeless and quality-of-life issues within the community. OMS students receive honors for display of kindness OMS students receive honors for display of kindness: Ten Oswego Middle School students were recently honored for exhibiting kindness throughout the month of October.   To receive this honor, students not only displayed kindness toward themselves but toward others and the school community.   “These student leaders help to make our OMS community a better place. Their good character is appreciated and is an inspiration to everyone. Congratulations and keep up the great work!” said Assistant Principal, Judith Osetek   The following students earned recognition for the character education award: seventh-graders Brayden Stancliffe, Eve Mackenzie, Kiara Rosa, Derek Gibson, Kiyarah Bragg; and eighth-graders Kailyn Van Buren, Michael Conzone, Kayla Turner, Maddox Mazzoli and Ashton Smith.

KPS teachers take “pie in the eye” for holiday giving project KPS teachers take “pie in the eye” for holiday giving project: Kingsford Park Elementary students were incentivized to donate full sized toiletries for the annual holiday giving project to be able to pie a teacher in the face.   The holiday giving project benefits KPS families in need. Boxes with teachers’ names were located in the main office for students to place their ballot in, which they were given each time they donated a full-sized toiletry item. The three teachers who received the most votes got a “pie in the eye” from a student.   “The KPS Student Council collected socks, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant for families in our community for the upcoming holidays. OHS brings fun competition to celebrate Halloween OHS brings fun competition to celebrate Halloween:   On Oct. 26, in the library of Oswego High School, students participated in the second annual sugar skull decorating contest in honor of Halloween.   The after-school event created a fun environment of competition between students as they painted the sugar skulls in hopes to win a ten-dollar Dunkin’ gift card.   Skulls were closely judged by Ms. Billie Jo Peterson, who named Clayton Andrews the winner of this year’s contest.   In Dec. OHS Librarian, Ms. Iorio and OHS Library Clerk, Mrs. O’Brien will host ornament decorating after school. Hot cocoa and snacks will be provided to all students who participate.  
Letter: Bomb threat at OHS 11.2 not credible Letter: Bomb threat at OHS 11.2 not credible: November 2, 2021 Dear Oswego City School District Community, I am writing to share that late Tuesday afternoon, prior to dismissal, administrators from Oswego High School received a report that an alleged threat was written in a bathroom stall. Given this alleged threat, school officials immediately began to assess its credibility. While doing so, the entire high school was evacuated until staff and school resource officers were able to complete a thorough assessment of the building. Due to proximity, Leighton Elementary School enacted a shelter-in-place as well. OHS Drama Club presents “Check Please” OHS Drama Club presents “Check Please”: Oswego High School Drama Club is set to take to the stage Nov. 12 and 13 for the production of “Check Please (Takes 1 and 2).”   Show times will be 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 at the Oswego High School Theater. Letter: False report of weapon at OHS Letter: False report of weapon at OHS: October 28, 2021 Dear Oswego City School District Community, I am writing to share that late this afternoon the district received an anonymous call which alleged that a student had brought in a weapon to Oswego High School. This call was received at dismissal time. Upon receiving this information, the district’s School Resource Officers and local authorities were immediately contacted. Together, the district and local authorities fully investigated this matter and our investigation determined the allegations were false and this anonymous report was not credible.
