OMS honors students for Honesty OMS honors students for Honesty:  At Oswego Middle School, the spotlight character trait for February was honesty and the school honored a dozen students who exude and display it. “During these challenging times, your honesty is an inspiration to everyone,” said OMS Principal Mary Beth Fierro said of the recipients. “Congratulations and keep up the great work!” OMS is proud to celebrate the following seventh- and eighth-grade students for showing honesty in February and throughout the year: Adam Greene, Alexander Rice, Alyssa Lofstrom, Audrey Donovan, Daniel Tsutsumishita, India Couse, Kayla Kinney, Kevin Waters, Lilliana Fragale, Logan Gardner, Logan Myhill and Maggie O’Leary.
Registration open for UPK 2021-22 Registration open for UPK 2021-22: The Oswego City School District is accepting applications for Universal Pre-K classes in the 2021-22 school year.   The pre-K program is free to all children residing within the district and who turn four years old by Dec. 1, 2021.       There are eight half-day sessions and one full-day session. The half-day sessions are offered at the Kingsford Park, Minetto, Fitzhugh Park and Charles E. Riley elementary schools.   Morning session is 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon session is 12:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. The full-day session is 9 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. at Frederick Leighton Elementary School.  Bussing is available by the district on their regular bus runs in the morning and afternoon, but there is no bussing at midday.   Registration ...

We have found ways to successfully adapt and problem solve on the fly to allow for safe in-person learning, graduation exercises, extracurricular activities, student athletics and more. Preview: Regional Spelling Bee set for Saturday, 3/20 Preview: Regional Spelling Bee set for Saturday, 3/20: Eighteen spellers from Oswego City School District and Trinity Catholic School will compete Saturday, March 20 in a livestreamed Regional Spelling Bee to determine who will represent the Port City at the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Hosted by The Palladium-Times, the socially distanced 30th Annual Regional Spelling Bee will stream live at 10 a.m. on YouTube.com/WBUCNY and on Spectrum channel 16 while the spellers take the stage in Oswego High School’s TV studio. “We are thrilled the annual tradition of our spelling bee can continue,” said OCSD Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin III. “Our students have worked very hard to get to this point, and we are very proud of their diligent efforts. This will result in the closure of all schools and no in-person or remote learning taking place. Why is the district enacting this emergency closure? The district is enacting this emergency closure because: We have a higher than normal amount of staff members (approximately 100 or more) who will be receiving their second vaccination dose beginning this Thursday. OHS sees successful return to in-person learning OHS sees successful return to in-person learning: Oswego High School successfully began its hybrid in-person model on Monday, March 8 as hundreds of students bustled through the doors for the first time this school year. Students wore masks and maintained their social distance per regulations, but even face coverings couldn’t hide the smiles and enthusiasm shared by pupils and staff alike. “It really felt like the first day of school even though it’s March,” said OHS Principal Patrick Wallace. “It was so nice to see students roaming the hallways and in the classrooms. Letter: BOE approves some sports spectators Letter: BOE approves some sports spectators: March 3, 2021 Dear Oswego City School District students, families and community, I am writing today with the exciting news from last night’s Board of Education meeting as a return for some spectators at OCSD sporting events has been approved! We know being able to root on our Buccaneer athletes is important to families and the community, and we look forward to the positivity and energy that a live crowd brings. Starting with the upcoming “Fall 2” sports seasons of football, girls swimming and diving, cheerleading and volleyball, our district will follow the revised guidelines from the Oswego County Health Department allowing two spectators per athlete. Fitzhugh Park grateful for recent Exelon donation Fitzhugh Park grateful for recent Exelon donation: Fitzhugh Park Elementary School recently received a large donation of clothing from Exelon that directly benefitted its student body. The variety of clothing included shirts, sweatpants, undergarments and gloves, and the donations will be distributed as the school year progresses. “This donation means a lot to our students who are in need of these clothing items,” said Fitzhugh Park Principal Donna Simmons. “When these items are given out, our staff really teaches the student the value of kindness and what they are getting is a donation from people who care and want to help.” Simmons added that students are taught that it’s nice when people in the community give back with the hope they are one day able to pay it forward if they are able to do so. ...

OMS students successfully return in-person OMS students successfully return in-person: Oswego Middle School successfully reopened its doors for in-person learning on Monday, Feb. 22. Students remained masked and socially distant, but their glee to be back in the building was apparent and masks could not hide the numerous smiles from students and staff alike. “Everything went really well with our safety protocols in place and it was just so great to have students in the building,” said OMS Principal Mary Beth Fierro. “Even though it’s the middle of the school year it really felt like the first day all over again.” The OMS hybrid model features students in the building either Monday and Tuesday or Thursday and Friday, and learning via livestream on the other days while Wednesday remains virtual for all students. OHS Interact Club donates blankets to maternity ward OHS Interact Club donates blankets to maternity ward: The Oswego High School Interact Club has still been finding ways to give back this year, even with social distancing.  The Interact Club works with the Oswego Rotary Club with the focus on “service above self,” and the goal of members is to be a part of something greater than themselves while being involved in projects to give back to the community. In past years, the club worked together to make and donate baby blankets to the maternity ward at Oswego Hospital, and had to get creative with remote learning and COVID-19 protocols in place to fill the need this year. Letter: County holding COVID testing at OHS Letter: County holding COVID testing at OHS: Feb. 12, 2021 Dear Oswego City School District Community, I am writing to share information about an upcoming free COVID-19 testing clinic. This clinic is being offered to 140 Oswego County community members (anyone who lives or works in the County) who pre-register. Registration is first come, first served. When will this event take place? This event will take place on next Tuesday, February 16, 2021, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Oswego High School parking lot. What are the specifics on this event? The Oswego County Department of Health will be setting up a rapid testing drive-through site in the OHS main parking lot.  Testing will take place between the hours of 8 AM and 4:00 PM.
