Applications available for pre-K registration Applications available for pre-K registration: Applications for the 2021-22 PreK Program are now available. This program is designed for children who were born between Dec. 2, 2016 and Dec. 1, 2017 and is offered at no cost. Children are selected by lottery.   The UPK teachers and staff strive to create a warm and nurturing environment for all our 4-year-olds. The goals of the program are to meet the individual needs of children in the areas of academic, language, social and emotional and physical development. This prepares them to successfully enter kindergarten the following year.   We anticipate having one full-day session at Frederick Leighton Elementary School and half-day sessions at Charles E. OCSD to launch livestream pilot program OCSD to launch livestream pilot program: January 28, 2021 Dear Elementary Parents and/or Guardians, I am writing to share that the district is going to be employing a new pilot – short term program for all of our elementary schools beginning Feb. 1. The goal of this pilot is to explore an option that we believe will allow for the district to provide more live instruction for our elementary students with their educational staff while also reducing the amount of asynchronous instruction that students are receiving. Late last Friday afternoon, Governor Andrew Cuomo shared with the State that he will allow “high-risk” high school sports to begin play on Monday, Feb. 1 – with the provision that local health departments also give their approval.   It should be noted, this decision was shared without any conversation beforehand with health officials and/or health and safety guidance for school districts to follow. As a result, many health departments across the State were unprepared to respond to this information. OMS honors students for Gratitude OMS honors students for Gratitude: At Oswego Middle School, the spotlight character trait of the month was gratitude and the school honored a dozen students who showcased that trait and thankfulness toward others while making the OMS community a better place, even virtually. “During these challenging times, your gratitude is an inspiration to everyone,” said OMS Principal Mary Beth Fierro of the recipients. “Congratulations and keep up the great work!” OMS is proud of the following seventh- and eighth-grade students for showing gratitude in November and throughout the year: Albert Burns, Alexis Galvin, Deena McDougall, Eli Belawske, Isaac Cuyler, Joseph Smith, Keegan Finch, Kennedy Porter, Maryann Cherchio, Olivia Kapuscinski, Skye Thompson and Tanner Defren.

Letter 01.08.2021: District furloughs anticipated Letter 01.08.2021: District furloughs anticipated: Jan. 8, 2021 Dear staff, I am writing to share that late this afternoon the Board of Education passed a resolution at its Board of Education meeting which involves authorizing the District where necessary, to furlough some district staff. As you are all aware, due to COVID-19 related concerns the district has had to temporarily shut down some of its operations. Given this reality and the fact that the district is legally obligated under the New York State Constitution to refrain from gifting public funds for any purpose, the district is now planning to implement furloughs wherever needed as we move forward throughout the remainder of this school year. OMS generosity project donates ornaments to Bishop’s Commons OMS generosity project donates ornaments to Bishop’s Commons: During its monthly character education, Oswego Middle School focused on generosity as its trait for the month and took part in a special generosity project.   Administrators said the students have taken notice of how hard the pandemic has been in places like nursing homes and assisted living facilities due to limited contact with their loved ones, and a special project helped spread some holiday cheer.   As part of their generosity project, OMS Student Council members and Mrs. Sally Kingsbury’s math class designed, created and donated ornaments with designs and messages to lift residents’ spirits and spread kindness at Bishop’s Commons in the city of Oswego.   “Among the most important things in life is to be kind and giving toward other people, ...

Aid money coming for OCSD soil remediation over one year instead of 15 Aid money coming for OCSD soil remediation over one year instead of 15: The state education department has agreed to provide aid for the ongoing Oswego City School District soil remediation project over the course of one year after completion instead of the previously expected 15, officials announced at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin III provided the update, applauding the development as wonderful for the district as the 87.5 percent of the project funded by state aid will be sent to the district much sooner than expected. “This is really great news,” said Dr. Calvin. “It helps with the financing, we can get this done a lot quicker and I’m just really excited about the plan.” The superintendent added that the quicker turnaround means the district would not need ...
OMS educators publish books ahead of holiday season OMS educators publish books ahead of holiday season: Two books from authors who teach at Oswego Middle School recently have had their books published and they are available now to the public. The two books are “Talking Through Reading and Writing” by OMS eighth-grade teacher Dan Rose and local professor Christine Walsh, and “The World is Mine: A Message of Love and Loss” by OMS special education teacher Nikki VandenBerg, who writes under the pen name Everly Cade.
